This Is What Happens When You Expand

“You can’t keep doing what you’ve always done and expect to get different results.”

I hear this a lot in the coaching world, and today I want to focus on the other side of the coin: if you take new and different action consistently, your life WILL change. Often in really big, unexpected, and wondrous ways!

The payoff for this kind of growth is huge, and the process is just that: a process. Changing your life from the inside out can be really uncomfortable, because it requires an unraveling of the current reality you know so well.

So before you consider making a change, it’s worth slowing down, checking in with yourself, and deciding ahead of time:

Are you willing to let go of the old ways of being and doing in order to open yourself up to the new-and-improved version of your life…even if there are growing pains along the way?

That dream you have…how badly do you really want it?

You have to be more committed to your vision than you are to maintaining what you know right now.

You have to want what you want badly enough to embrace the discomfort of familiar patterns and relationships falling away in order to create space for the new, juicy bits to arrive.

It can be helpful to know what to expect ahead of time. This way, you can mentally and emotionally prepare for the in-between stage that occurs right before the arrival of what you want.

CHANGES IN RELATIONSHIPS

I’ve noticed that some of the most challenging shifts tend to happen in relationships, when we outgrow friendships, partnerships, or certain dynamics within relationships. For many of us, it’s a tough pill to swallow when we sense that our chapter with someone (or the way we formerly related to one another) is now complete, or has taken on a different form. It can be uncomfortable and at times painful to notice and feel that disconnect.

I remember almost opting out of the Spiritual Psychology program that I was so excited about simply because I knew, deep down, that I’d outgrow the person I was dating at that time. Thank goodness I confided in a friend who, quite bluntly, told me that was a terrible reason not to pursue my passion!

It was a tough decision at the time, but I am beyond grateful that I chose to expand versus contract, and trust my intuition around participating in the program. The old relationship that fell away isn’t even in the same realm of what I now share with my fiancé Will! But I would’ve had no way of knowing what kind of love was available to me if I hadn’t been willing to let go and trust that something better — something more aligned — was out there waiting for me.

THE ARRIVAL OF SOMETHING BETTER

The more I’ve experienced inner shifts, the more I’ve watched in awe as my outer world changes as a byproduct. Our outer realities reflect our inner realities, and what unfolds often exceeds our expectations!

If you’re willing to embrace the discomfort that comes with the falling away of familiarity: prepare to be pleasantly surprised :)

By opening ourselves up to change, trusting the process, and surrendering our attachment and control around things staying the same, we land in lives that feel more “us” than anything we could’ve even imagined for ourselves.

I feel like everything in my life changed in ways I couldn’t have anticipated. My career. My relationships. My home. My body. From an outside perspective, it all looks different than it did a few years ago.

And yet…the biggest, most powerful changes of all occurred internally, because how you feel in your life is everything. I couldn’t put a price on the sense of joy, freedom, and fulfillment I now experience on a day-to-day basis.

So, yes — your new life will cost you your old one.

Will it be uncomfortable? Probably.

Will it feel weird and unfamiliar? Most likely.

Will it require a leap of faith and trust in something better, before that something better has arrived? Definitely.

Is it worth it? YES! Yes, yes, a million times yes!

Because when all is said and done, and you’re sitting pretty in the most “you” life yet, you’ll see: the cost is actually a pretty decent deal considering the pricelessness of what awaits you on the other side.

To your expansion,
